Our Curriculum

$5 Beginner Classes

In April 2002, the Academy pioneered the first beginner class of its kind in southwest Virginia. With the rising cost of education, we at the Mendez Academy felt that trying out music education should be accessible for everyone. Piano and Guitar classes are available for all ages. These classes will cover the basics of sight reading, fingering, chords, and music theory. Although classes are formed by age (Ages 6 - Adult.), the older students are always welcome to join a younger class. For example, parents are free to join with their children in a younger classes assuming they can fit in the chairs.

Voice

Many of our students are given the opportunity to compete locally and regionally in styles varying from classical to contemporary, both sacred and secular. Our teaching staff is unsurpassed. Our students have moved on to win scholarships and other recognized competitions. Potential students are usually interviewed and given a small audition for placement at the Academy. All students will be taught the basics of vocal technique and then instructed in the musical styles of their choosing such as broadway, pop, musical theatre, jazz, and classical. Students range from ages 7 to 73.

Guitar/Bass

One area that we have found in needing more structured education is the guitar student. Many students in the past have learned from just watching some one play but not understanding the fundamentals of music. Our guitar students are trained in theory as well as technique in both classical and contemporary styles of the guitar. Four times a year the students of the Mendez Academy are all given the opportunity to perform in a recital or concert. Our students eventually move on to win scholarships for college.

Piano

Our Piano students are trained in the classics as well as in contemporary styles of music such as jazz, contemporary praise, and even country. Theory, chords and sight reading are emphasized. Once the students are trained, they are invited to perform in many functions in the community such as choir accompanists, wedding musicians and other similar musical opportunities.

Band Instruments

At times it is difficult to get the individual attention on a school band instrument simply because there is just not enough time for the band director to focus on each student. At the Academy this is what is achieved. Our students are known for moving up in rank quicker and with more understanding of their instruments. Our goal is to assist the local school band director in making their music programs even more musically excellent.

Praise/Sacred Bands

Young Light is our traveling youth praise team. Many students are given the opportunity to audition for bands and teams that will visit local churches to perform for worship services. Churches interested in hosting our teams may contact the academy for booking information.

Pop/Contemporary Band

As in all of our audition teams, our pop band will tour in the community performing in many contemporary styles including pop, hip hop, rock and jazz.

Drums and Percussions

From Jazz to Hip Hop and Rock to Pop, our students are given multiple opportunities to learn and perfomr not just the basics but also more advanced areas of music.

Director's Class

This innovative class focuses on many aspects of directing teams and musical groups useful both in churches and in other areas of music leading. Ages 13 and up.

Lil' Majors

This program is specifically designed for children ages 4 and 5. Your child will enjoy learning about the basics of rhythm, dance, melody, singing, musical expressions and more. We believe that creativity must be encouraged as early as possible in a child's development. The Little Major's program is an exciting and rewarding investment into each child's future.
